A recent Iftaar event organised by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in Poonjeeri near Mahabalipuram highlighted both improved planning and the persistent challenge of managing massive crowds drawn by party leader Vijay.

After the chaotic scenes at its earlier Iftaar in Chennai, the party chose a more spacious venue this time, hoping to better handle the influx of supporters. Organisers implemented stricter controls, including instructing attendees to remain seated, avoid using mobile phones, and maintain decorum during prayers.

For much of the event, these measures appeared effective. The gathering remained orderly while Vijay participated in prayers. However, as soon as he prepared to leave, the atmosphere quickly turned chaotic, with crowds surging forward in an attempt to get closer to the actor-turned-politician.

A separate enclosure for women and children saw similar excitement. Organisers had initially managed the crowd by assuring attendees that Vijay would visit their section after prayers. But when it became clear he would not, many rushed out, while others resorted to filming him from a distance, even using large screens to capture close-up visuals.

Despite tighter arrangements, pressure from the crowd was evident from the beginning, prompting last-minute restrictions on entry. The situation reflected the difficulty TVK faces in balancing its political messaging with the overwhelming popularity of its leader.

Even party organisers were not immune to the excitement. Some who had earlier enforced strict discipline were later seen edging closer for a glimpse of Vijay, underscoring the magnetic pull he continues to exert over supporters.
