The Congress on Monday hit out at Home Minister Amit Shah for "consciously absenting" himself from the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha to avoid accountability for his ministry's actions during the student protests, and asked how can Parliament function if the government disrespects it in this brazen manner.

The opposition party claimed that Shah has been "refusing" to explain who gave the order that permitted the CRPF to "use metallic pellet guns" against students.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said it has been 14 days since the brutality unleashed on India’s youth by the Delhi Police and Central Armed Paramilitary Forces that report directly to the Home Minister.

"Since 20th July, the Home Minister has consciously absented himself from both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. He has refused to be accountable for the actions of his Ministry. He refuses to explain who gave the order that permitted the CRPF to use metallic pellet guns against students," Ramesh said on X.

How can Parliament function if the government disrespects it in this brazen manner, the Congress leader asked.

The Opposition has been seeking a statement from the Home Minister on the police action against protesting students on July 20, including use of pellet guns, and have also demanded his resignation over the issue.

The INDIA bloc has vowed to corner the government on issues of alleged donation theft and the use of "brutal force" against students during their protests over the NEET paper leak.
