Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday said the controversy over a book on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was unnecessary, adding that attempts to create sensational issues for publicity were unfortunate. His remarks came after Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad was allegedly heard in an audio clip threatening Kolhapur-based publisher Prashant Ambi over the book Shivaji Kon Hota by CPI leader Govind Pansare.
Speaking to reporters, Fadnavis noted that the book was first published in the 1980s and questioned whether those fuelling the row had even read it. He said Shivaji Maharaj’s stature was so great that no one could diminish it, and described the current developments as anti-social and insensitive.
On the upcoming Maharashtra Legislative Council elections, the chief minister said decisions regarding candidates would be taken by the BJP’s parliamentary board through the party’s established process. He added that discussions were underway and announcements would be made in due course. Nine members of the council, including former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, are set to retire on May 13, while polling is scheduled for May 12. The BJP plans to contest four of the nine seats.

Commenting on the sugar industry, Fadnavis said Maharashtra has ensured more than 99 per cent payment of Fair and Remunerative Price dues to farmers, though some fluctuations may arise because of market conditions affecting mills. He said the state government has held consultations with industry stakeholders and formed a committee to examine post-season issues and recommend further policy support, including possible assistance from the Centre.
