Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the Centre remains committed to the “Act East” policy and is now working with greater urgency under an “Act Fast” approach for the development of the eight northeastern states, which he described as India’s “Ashtalakshmi” symbolising prosperity and progress.
Addressing a programme at Paljor Stadium to mark the culmination of Sikkim’s year-long 50th statehood celebrations, Modi said tourism is the backbone of Sikkim’s economy and improving connectivity is essential to attracting more visitors. He announced that the government is working on major infrastructure projects, including an expressway linking Bagdogra in West Bengal to Sikkim and a ring road in Gangtok.
He added that ropeway and skyway projects are also being planned, while a separate expressway in Nathula would further strengthen tourist access. According to the prime minister, the Northeast, including Sikkim, is poised for rapid growth and will play an important role in India’s future development.
Praising Sikkim’s natural beauty and biodiversity, Modi said the state’s clean surroundings and fresh air reflect the strong environmental awareness of its people. He noted that the region has the potential to become a centre for sustainable development through sectors such as organic farming.
Calling Sikkim a land of peace, spirituality and wellness, Modi urged travellers from across the country to visit the Himalayan state. He said the Centre is promoting eco and wellness tourism, with around 1,000 homestays being developed and infrastructure for adventure tourism also being expanded.
The prime minister described Sikkim as a shining example of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat” and said it stands as a symbol of unity amid attempts to divide society on religious and political lines. He also highlighted the state’s rich orchid diversity and scenic charm.
Referring to sports, Modi said the government is focused on improving facilities in Sikkim and nurturing talent, particularly in football and archery. Earlier in the day, he interacted with young football players.
He also criticised previous Congress governments, alleging they neglected Sikkim and the wider Northeast. Modi cited delays in the Sevoke-Rangpo railway line, saying the project gained momentum only after the NDA came to power.
