The Centre on Wednesday said an Inter-Departmental Committee (IDC) reviews complaints related to violations of programme and advertising norms by private television channels.

Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan informed the Lok Sabha that all advertisements aired on private satellite TV channels must comply with the Advertising Code under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995 and associated rules.

He said the IDC, set up by the central government, examines complaints regarding breaches of the Programme Code and Advertising Code.

Based on the committee’s recommendations, action is taken against erring channels, including advisories, warnings, apology scrolls and, in some cases, off-air orders when violations are established.
