Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced that a Green Technology and Innovation Strategic Partnership has been formally institutionalised as a key pillar of India-Nordic cooperation, outlining an expansive roadmap for sustainable development and technological collaboration.

Delivering a joint statement after the 3rd India-Nordic Summit in Oslo, PM Modi said the partnership seeks to combine the specialised expertise of Nordic nations with India’s skilled workforce and technological capabilities to create sustainable and future-ready global solutions.

Highlighting the broad scope of the initiative, the Prime Minister said the framework would connect the strengths of different Nordic countries with India’s talent base and industrial ecosystem.

“With this Green Technology Partnership, we will connect Iceland’s expertise in geothermal and fisheries, Norway’s expertise in blue economy and Arctic, and all Nordic countries’ expertise in maritime and sustainability to India’s skills to ensure a better future for the entire world,” PM Modi said.

The partnership also extends into advanced manufacturing, defence, telecommunications, cyber security and digital innovation.

Explaining the sectoral collaborations further, PM Modi stated that Sweden’s expertise in advanced manufacturing and defence, Finland’s leadership in telecom and digital technologies, and Denmark’s strengths in cyber security and health technology would be integrated with India’s human resource and innovation capabilities to develop “trusted solutions for the entire world.”

The Prime Minister arrived in Oslo on Monday after concluding bilateral engagements in Sweden. His visit marks the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Norway in 43 years.

The summit brought together leaders of the five Nordic countries, including Kristrun Frostadottir, Jonas Gahr Store, Ulf Kristersson, Petteri Orpo and Mette Frederiksen.

The India-Nordic Summit process began in Stockholm in 2018 and was followed by the second edition in Copenhagen in 2022. The latest summit in Oslo aimed to deepen strategic and economic ties between India and the Nordic region.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, PM Modi’s visit is expected to significantly boost trade and investment relations between India and Nordic countries.

The engagement also focused on strengthening resilient supply chains in the backdrop of the proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement and the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement signed with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

The summit included extensive sector-specific discussions among participating leaders, reflecting a shared commitment toward sustainable economic growth, technological innovation and long-term strategic cooperation.
