India has the potential to emerge as one of the world’s top three countries in various aspects of artificial intelligence (AI), driven by its strong developer ecosystem and expanding focus on real-world applications, said Kris Gopalakrishnan, co-founder of Infosys and chairman of Axilor Ventures.
Speaking to ANI on the sidelines of the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, Gopalakrishnan said the true impact of AI will be defined by the applications built and deployed using the technology.
“I believe India can become one of the top three countries globally in different aspects of AI. The real impact of AI will come through the applications we deploy. India is a large market with a huge number of use cases and a vast pool of developers,” he said.
He noted that India’s scale, coupled with its strong developer base, gives the country a distinct advantage in leveraging AI. According to him, India is particularly well positioned to lead at the application layer, where AI-driven solutions address practical, real-world problems.
“At the application level, India can actually become number one,” Gopalakrishnan said, highlighting the country’s strength in building and implementing AI solutions.
He also pointed to India’s efforts to develop advanced AI systems, including multi-modal and multi-lingual models that go beyond English-only frameworks. Such models, he said, are designed to reflect India’s linguistic diversity and cater to a wide range of use cases.
“When it comes to large language models, we are working on multi-modal, multi-lingual models that are very different from English-only models,” he said.
Emphasising the need for sustained investment in research and innovation, Gopalakrishnan highlighted low-power computing as a critical area for future AI growth. Advances in this field, he said, would be key to developing next-generation processors that can power future AI systems.
“Looking ahead, low-power computing will be crucial. By investing in research in this area, we can build the next generation of processors that will drive AI development,” he added.
Gopalakrishnan also said that hosting global discussions and summits on AI in India would further strengthen the country’s position in the global AI ecosystem.

“By bringing global conversations on the direction and future of AI to India, and discussing the opportunities AI offers, India’s role in the global AI landscape will only continue to grow,” he said.
