Former senior diplomat Vidya Bhushan Soni on Thursday said that the ongoing differences between United States and Iran over ceasefire efforts highlight the complexities of diplomacy, stressing that conflicts cannot be resolved through one-sided declarations.

Speaking on the issue, Soni noted that Iran’s reaction to remarks by Donald Trump was predictable, given the country’s deep-rooted sense of identity, history, and cultural pride. He said such a nation is unlikely to be influenced by what he described as political “theatrics.”

Criticising Washington’s approach, Soni said it is unrealistic for any one country to decide how and when a conflict should end. He pointed out that initiating hostilities and then attempting to call off the conflict on one’s own terms does not reflect a balanced or credible diplomatic process. According to him, both sides have their own priorities and strategies that must be acknowledged.

He further emphasised that while Iran may be open to dialogue, meaningful negotiations require careful handling and adherence to established diplomatic norms. He expressed surprise that a country with extensive diplomatic resources could overlook the importance of tone, protocol, and mutual respect in sensitive negotiations.

Soni added that successful diplomacy often involves understanding the other side’s concerns and maintaining respect for national pride, rather than projecting dominance. Without this, he suggested, efforts at negotiation are unlikely to succeed.

Highlighting the wider impact of the conflict, he warned that global economic stability is at risk, with vulnerable populations—particularly in parts of Africa and Asia—bearing the brunt despite having no direct role in the crisis.

On India’s position, Soni said India should continue to support all genuine diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation. Referring to recent discussions between Narendra Modi and Trump, he said any initiative that promotes peace aligns with both global and national interests.

He concluded that resolving the conflict is essential not just for regional stability but for the broader goal of maintaining global peace.
