Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader P K Kunhalikutty on Saturday said Kerala Congress (M)’s decision to remain with the Left Democratic Front (LDF) would not have any impact on the United Democratic Front (UDF), asserting that the opposition alliance’s recent electoral victories have strengthened its position.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a UDF conclave here, Kunhalikutty dismissed speculation that the Kerala Congress (M) might switch sides following its poor performance in the local body elections.
Kerala Congress (M) chairman Jose K Mani on Friday put an end to such speculation by announcing that his party would continue as part of the LDF.
Kunhalikutty said there was no basis for the reports suggesting discussions between the UDF and Kerala Congress (M).
“After Kerala Congress (M)’s defeat in the local body polls, some political circles speculated that the party might leave the LDF and join the UDF. But neither the UDF nor the Muslim League held any talks on this matter,” he said.
He maintained that Kerala Congress (M) was part of another political alliance and that decisions regarding its future rested solely with that party.
“Our stand has always been clear. They belong to a different front, and it is for them to decide their political course,” Kunhalikutty said, adding that the UDF never felt the need to engage in such discussions after its own electoral successes.
He asserted that Kerala Congress (M)’s choice to remain in the LDF would not weaken the UDF in any way.
“The election results have shown that we do not need to place our expectations on them. Whatever decision they take will not affect us,” he said, while noting that parties with ideological proximity to the UDF could be considered in the future.
Kunhalikutty said the UDF was working on an alternative agenda to address issues facing the state and expressed confidence of victory in the upcoming Assembly elections.
“Our confidence stems from consistent wins in by-elections, parliamentary polls and local body elections. After all these victories, questioning us about Kerala Congress (M) does not arise,” he said.
Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan said efforts were underway to broaden the UDF’s base ahead of the elections. He said individuals, political parties and social organisations could align with the front.
Satheesan, however, categorically denied any talks with Kerala Congress (M).

“Did we ever say they would come with us? No one in the UDF has said that,” he said, adding that details about new entrants would be disclosed at an appropriate time.
