Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday raised concerns in the Rajya Sabha over an alleged shortage of LPG across the country, accusing the government of failing to take timely measures to prevent the crisis and curb black marketing.

Responding to the remarks, Union minister and Leader of the House J. P. Nadda said the Opposition was trying to create “anarchy in the country” instead of supporting the government during a crisis.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Kharge said the LPG shortage amid the ongoing tensions in West Asia had caused widespread distress across India.

He said the shortage was affecting poor and vulnerable households, the middle class, restaurants, hostels and commercial establishments.

According to Kharge, the government was aware that energy supplies could be affected when the conflict in West Asia escalated, especially after it issued advisories for Indian citizens in the region.

“Despite this, no preparations were made, and many sectors across the country are now facing problems,” he said, alleging that the situation reflected poor management and flawed foreign policy.

Kharge also claimed LPG cylinders were being sold in the black market for as much as Rs 5,000 each.

He urged the government to take immediate steps to ensure the availability of cylinders at affordable prices for households and small businesses.

The Congress leader also referred to a statement by the Union petroleum minister in the Lok Sabha claiming there was no shortage of LPG and advising people not to believe rumours, saying the ground reality was different.

Reacting to the criticism, Nadda said it was unfortunate that the Opposition, particularly the Indian National Congress, was politicising the issue.

“They are instigating the peaceful people of the country… in a crisis situation, instead of standing with the country, they are trying to bring anarchy,” he said.
