Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Thursday cautioned that despite reports hinting at possible peace efforts led by the United States, the situation in West Asia remains volatile, with no clear signs of an immediate resolution.

Speaking about the evolving crisis, Tharoor said recent statements from Iran do not indicate that peace is close, even as speculation grows around potential diplomatic engagement involving US Vice President JD Vance. He also pointed to reports suggesting the deployment of thousands of American Marines to the region, warning that tensions could escalate further before easing.

He highlighted the serious implications for India, particularly in the energy sector. According to Tharoor, the country imports around 60 per cent of its LPG requirements, with nearly 90 per cent of that supply coming from Qatar and other Gulf nations. Any disruption, he said, could directly impact households, restaurants, and small businesses dependent on cooking gas.

In addition to LPG concerns, he flagged the risk of rising fuel prices. While petrol and diesel rates have so far remained relatively stable, he warned that a prolonged conflict could lead to sharp increases, affecting the broader economy.

Tharoor also referred to the appeal for peace made by António Guterres, stressing that India should articulate a clearer position. While supporting peace in principle, he noted that the country is not currently playing an active role in facilitating dialogue.

The conflict in West Asia has now stretched into its fourth week, severely affecting trade through the Strait of Hormuz—a crucial route for global oil and gas shipments. The situation intensified after the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in joint US-Israel strikes on February 28, triggering retaliatory attacks by Iran across the region.

These developments have disrupted energy supplies and raised concerns about global economic stability.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that US President Donald Trump is keen to avoid a prolonged conflict and is aiming to bring the situation under control within weeks, although uncertainty continues to loom over the region.
