Derek O'Brien on Wednesday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi should resign if the All India Trinamool Congress returns to power in West Bengal after the ongoing assembly elections.

The Rajya Sabha MP made the remarks in a video shared on X, where he expressed confidence that the party led by Mamata Banerjee would secure victory once again. He also accused Modi of making exaggerated political claims and challenged him to accept responsibility for the election outcome.

O'Brien said the prime minister had projected himself as the candidate across all 294 assembly seats in Bengal and should step down if the TMC emerges victorious.

His comments came amid an intense political battle between the ruling TMC and the Bharatiya Janata Party in the state.

Polling was underway on Wednesday in 142 constituencies during the second and final phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 under heavy security arrangements. The contest is being closely watched to see whether the TMC retains control in southern Bengal or whether the BJP can mount a serious challenge for power.
