Veteran BJP leader and former Minister for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said that the population explosion was not a problem of any particular religion, but an issue that is a challenge to the country.

Naqvi is reportedly being considered for the post of Vice-President of India by the ruling party.

Naqvi said, no country can ignore or tolerate the problem of population explosion. The effective measures taken by most countries to control the population have yielded positive results.

The people of many countries that have managed to control their population growth have supported their governments in their efforts. The people have cooperated with the regimes to check the burden of the growing populations on their resources.

Naqvi was taking a jibe at Samajwadi Party MP Shafiqur Rehman Burke's remark that giving birth to a child is the work of Allah. Naqvi said the rapid growth of the population can no longer be ignored in India. Naqvi said some people always want to create problems for the country. They want to create a ruckus on the issue of population control on the pretext of “Allah's will.” Naqvi said there is no use connecting the population growth of India to a single religion.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had also expressed his worries about the population explosion while speaking at a function in Lucknow on World Population Day.

Yogi Adityanath said that India's population growth is a result of a demographic imbalance. Adityanath was commenting after a United Nations report released on Monday said that India's population is projected to exceed China's by 2023.
