The Punjab government is offering a subsidy of up to Rs 80,000 for setting up mushroom production units under the State Plan Scheme as part of its efforts to encourage crop diversification and enhance farmer's income.

Horticulture Minister Mohinder Bhagat said farmers can establish a small mushroom production unit at an estimated cost of Rs 2 lakh. Under the scheme, the Department of Horticulture provides a 40 per cent subsidy, capped at Rs 80,000, to eligible beneficiaries.

He said mushroom cultivation requires comparatively less land and water while offering attractive returns with modest investment.

Bhagat said a small mushroom production unit can be established on around 1,800 square feet, enabling even small and marginal farmers to benefit from the scheme.

He said the Punjab government is making sustained efforts to strengthen the horticulture sector and increase farmers' income through farmer-centric initiatives.

Explaining the process, the minister said that interested farmers can contact their nearest District Horticulture Officer to apply under the State Plan Scheme.
