The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day on Thursday without transacting any legislative business.

As the House convened, newly elected members took the oath as members of the Upper House.

The House then observed a moment of silence in memory of legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, who died on April 12 at the age of 92 in Mumbai, and senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Mohsina Kidwai, who passed away on April 8 at the age of 94.

Chairman C P Radhakrishnan paid tribute to India's recent strides in science and technology, noting the historic achievement at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu.

The 500-MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) attained first criticality on April 6, 2026, marking a historic step in India's long-term energy security and advancing its indigenous nuclear technology capabilities.

With this achievement, India has officially entered the second stage of its three-stage nuclear power programme, he said.

The House was thereafter adjourned for the day.
