The self-enumeration phase of the Census 2027 has begun in Gangtok, with Governor Om Prakash Mathur and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang formally launching the process on Wednesday.

Both leaders completed their own self-enumeration using the newly introduced online census portal in the presence of officials from the State Census Directorate.

Describing the exercise as crucial for the country’s future, the governor said that Census 2027 would play a key role in shaping development over the next decade. Echoing this sentiment, the chief minister stressed that reliable and detailed data is essential for effective governance, enabling better planning and more equitable growth.

The census will be conducted in two stages. The first phase will focus on houselisting and housing-related data, while the second phase will cover population details.

A key feature of this edition is the introduction of self-enumeration, allowing residents to submit their information online through a secure portal in 16 languages before officials carry out door-to-door verification.
