A senior official of the Election Commission of India on Wednesday underlined the importance of regional language communication and grassroots outreach for the successful implementation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, particularly in geographically challenging states such as Sikkim.

Apurva Kumar Singh, Deputy Director of the Media Section in the poll panel, said the media serves as a crucial link between the Election Commission and the public in ensuring effective revision and purification of electoral rolls.

He explained that the SIR exercise goes beyond a routine summary revision and combines both intensive verification and summary updates to make electoral rolls more accurate, inclusive and reflective of ground realities.

Singh stressed that communication in regional languages is vital to spread awareness and encourage public participation in the process.

According to him, a well-executed revision exercise helps ensure better preparedness before major elections, minimises disputes and contributes to smoother polling operations.

The SIR process in Sikkim is scheduled to begin on May 30.

As part of the exercise, booth-level officers (BLOs) will conduct door-to-door visits until June 28 to distribute and collect enumeration forms from voters.

The draft electoral rolls will be published on July 5, while the period for filing claims and objections will continue from July 5 to August 4.

Officials said claims and objections will be disposed of between July 5 and September 2, and the final electoral rolls are scheduled to be published on September 6.
