The self-enumeration phase of Census 2027 has officially begun in Sikkim, with Governor Om Prakash Mathur and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang launching the process on Wednesday.
Both leaders completed their own enumeration using the newly introduced online census portal, in the presence of officials from the State Census Directorate.
Highlighting the importance of the exercise, the governor said that Census 2027 would play a crucial role in shaping the state’s development over the next decade. The chief minister emphasised that reliable and detailed data is essential for effective governance, adding that the initiative would help ensure balanced growth and better planning for all sections of society.
The nationwide census will be conducted in two stages. The first phase focuses on houselisting and housing data, while the second will involve the population count.
For the first time, self-enumeration has been introduced in India’s census process, allowing citizens to submit their details online before the traditional door-to-door survey begins. This secure digital platform supports 16 languages, making it more accessible to a wider population.
