The self-enumeration phase of Census 2027 was formally launched in Sikkim on Wednesday, with Governor Om Prakash Mathur and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang initiating the process, officials confirmed.
Both leaders completed their own entries using the newly introduced online census portal in the presence of officials from the State Census Directorate.
Describing the exercise as crucial for the future, the governor said the upcoming census would play a key role in shaping the country’s development trajectory over the next decade. The chief minister stressed that reliable and detailed data is essential for good governance, adding that the initiative would support inclusive growth and better policy planning.
The Census 2027 will be carried out in two stages. The first phase will involve houselisting and collection of housing-related data, followed by the second phase focused on population enumeration.
For the first time, self-enumeration has been incorporated into the census process, enabling citizens to provide their details online before field officials conduct door-to-door verification. The digital platform allows users to securely submit information in 16 languages.
