Soldier shoots self dead at Army camp in Jammu

A soldier allegedly shot himself dead with his service rifle at an Army camp in Jammu, officials said on Thursday.

The deceased, a 24-year-old Agniveer from Uttar Pradesh, was on guard duty at the Nagrota garrison when he allegedly took the extreme step around midnight on Wednesday, they said.

The soldier died on the spot. His body was later shifted to the Government Medical College hospital for post-mortem examination.

Officials said the reason behind the incident is yet to be ascertained. Police have initiated inquest proceedings, and further investigation is underway to determine the circumstances that led to the death.

The Indian Army has been informed, and standard procedures are being followed in the matter, officials added.
