Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said that introducing the Uniform Civil Code Bill in the Assam Assembly would enable a formal and recorded debate on the necessity of such legislation in the state.
Referring to the proposed law, Sarma said the discussion would help explain why a Uniform Civil Code is needed and how it aligns with the vision of the country’s founding leaders.
The statement came after Assam Parliamentary Affairs Minister Atul Bora tabled “The Uniform Civil Code, Assam, 2026 Bill” in the Assembly on behalf of the chief minister during the ongoing session of the House.
The proposed legislation seeks to prohibit polygamy and make the registration of live-in relationships mandatory. However, its provisions will not apply to Scheduled Tribes residing in Assam.

Opposition parties, including the Indian National Congress, Raijor Dal and All India Trinamool Congress, objected to the move and called for broader consultations with stakeholders before the bill’s introduction.
