The Mulayam Singh Yadav-led Samajwadi party may have fallen short of expectations in taking on the Yogi Aditya Nath Yogi-led Bhartiya Janata party in the elections to the Uttar Pradesh Assembly but remains the only party that will be sending 35 of the 36 Muslims to the 402-member Legislative Assembly.

The Muslims who constitute 19 percent of the State’s population will have an 8.93 percent share in the legislature. This show is much better than 24 MLAs in the previous Assembly.

This means nearly one-fourth of the Samajawadi Party's winning candidates in the elections are Muslims.

Like the last time, BJP had not fielded even a single Muslim candidate while its ally Apana Dal’s nominee Haider Ali Khan, lost to the Samajwadi Party’s Abdullah Azam in the Suar constituency. Haider Ali Khan is from the erstwhile Royal family of Rampur Nawab.

The elected Muslims include stalwarts like Azam Khan, who contested from jail – and his son Abdullah Azim Khan and the jailed-gangster-turned politician Mukhtar Abbas Ansari.

Ansari's nephew Suhaib Ansari won from Mohammadabad with a margin of 18,199 votes against BJP’s sitting MLA Alka Rai.

The Rashtriya Lok Dal that had an electoral understanding with Samajwadi Party in the elections has sent one Muslim, Ghulam Mohammad, to the Assembly.

The All India Majlis-e-Itihadul Muslmeen (AIMIM) of Assadudin Owaisi had repeated its poor performance in the UP elections. In all, 99 of its 100 candidates have lost their security deposit for not being able to secure minimum votes.

The only AIMIM candidate who could save his deposit was Shah Alam alias Guddu Jamail from the Mubarakpura constituency. Shah Alam is a former BSP leader.

Deoband where India’s largest Islamic seminary Darul Uloom is situated and has almost 45 percent Muslim population, Brajesh Kumar of BJP was re-elected in a multi-corner contest.

Brajesh has won with a 93890 vote margin over his nearest rival Kartikey Rana of the Samajwadi Party.
In Kairana, SP’s Nahid Hasan polled 1,31,035 votes to stage a victory against BJP Mriganka Singh who bagged 1,05,148.
