Eknath Shinde and actor Amrita Rao took part in vibrant Gudi Padwa celebrations in Thane on Thursday, as residents marked the occasion with traditional fervour.
The city was adorned with colourful ‘gudis’, flags, and elaborate rangolis, reflecting the festive spirit. Considered auspicious, the hoisting of ‘gudis’ at homes is believed to bring prosperity and good fortune.
A grand procession organised by the Sri Koupineshwar Sanskrutik Dnyas featured over 50 decorated floats. Notably, members of the transgender community participated for the first time, adding to the inclusivity of the celebrations.
Shinde, along with local MLA Sanjay Kelkar, carried a palanquin of the presiding deity of the Koupineshwar temple for a short distance, while another palanquin bearing the idol of Goddess Durga was carried by women dressed in traditional attire. Floral tributes were also offered at Chintamani Chowk.
Amrita Rao, who attended the event in traditional Marathi attire, praised the enthusiasm of the people, highlighting the active participation of both young and elderly residents.

The procession route was decorated with arches and flags, while cultural performances such as Yakshagana, Huli Kunitha, and Chende percussion added a diverse touch. Several dignitaries, including MP Naresh Mhaske and Mayor Sharmila Pimpalolkar, were also present at the celebrations.
