Eminent Muslims from Northeast are speaking against the killing of Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur in the name of Islam and Prophet Mohammad. Padma Shri Dr Illias Ali said Udaipur is an act of terror and anti-Islamic and had demanded demanded capital punishment for the two culprits.

"The prime objective of Udaipur incident is to defame Islam, create terror and hatred in the society. Terror has no place in Islam and those who are resorting to violence in the name of Islam are not followers of Prophet Mohammed. They are rather enemy of Prophet," Dr Ali said.

Dr Ali who has drafted Assam's population control policy, says when Prophet Mohammed conquered Mecca he even pardoned his worst enemies there. Prophet has never advocated hate against hate. "Perpetrators of Udaipur have insulted and defamed our Prophet. These elements should be rooted out from our society," Dr Ali said.

Dr Ayesha Ashraf Ahmed, former professor of Shillong College in Meghalaya said all acts of violence are reprehensible. She, however, said an atrocity or any act of violence committed by someone who purports to represent Islam is especially disturbing. The primary question that arises is whether such a barbaric act is justified in Islam. The answer is a resounding "no”, she said.

“Beyond that, the Holy Quran in no way justifies murder; it unequivocally states, "Whosoever killed a person ... it shall be as if he had killed all mankind" (5:32). Such acts of violence are condemned in the Quran and by the Prophet Muhammad time and time again. Those responsible for Udaipur incident no way represent any form or part of Islam. The perpetrators of such act are enemies of Prophet Mohammed,” Dr Ahmed said.

Nekibur Zaman, lawyer and chairperson of Joint State Haj Committee and North East Haj Pilgrims Reception Committee said the Udaipur incident has once again defamed Islam. He said no sane Muslim can support violence to safeguard Muslim.

“The Udaipur incident should be thoroughly probed. The investigating agency should go deeper into the incident so that such incident could be prevented in future. No one associated with the incident should be spared,” Zaman said.
