Indian athletes enjoyed a day of mixed fortunes as competitions kickstarted at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games on Friday.

In Boxing former World Championship bronze medallist, Shiva Thapa outplayed Pakistan's Suleman Baloch 5-0 in a Round of 32 bout in the men's light welterweight division (60kg-63.5 kg) to make it to the pre-quarterfinals.

Shiva, the lone Indian boxer on display on the opening day of the competition won a unanimous decision for a win on points.

In Table Tennis both the men’s and women’s teams made short work of their opponents in the opening round-robin matches in the team championship.

While the women led by Manika Batra outclassed South Africa 3-0, the men defeated Barbados by a similar margin.

In Swimming, Srihari Nataraj qualified for the semifinals of the 100 meters backstroke. Sajan Prakash was however, eliminated in the 50 meters Butterfly event. He came eighth in his heat.

Triathletes Adarsh Muralidharan and Vishwanath Yadav had a forgettable debut in the event. While Adarsh finished 30th, Yadav was 33rd.

In Cricket too there was disappointment with Australia defeating India by three wickets. Batting first India set a target of 155 in 20 overs.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur top-scored for India with 52 runs.

For the Aussies Jess Jonassen took four wickets.

In reply helped by Ashleigh Gardner’s unbeaten half-century Australia overcame the target with one over to spare.

Renuka Singh was the pick of the Indian bowlers picking up four wickets for 18 runs in her allotted four overs.

The Indian track cycling team had a disappointing day with both the men’s and women’s team failing to advance further.
