New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson is gearing up for a crucial T20I series against India, which he calls the “perfect preparation” for next month’s T20 World Cup. The five-match clash kicks off on Wednesday, with Nagpur hosting the opener.
Riding high from their recent 2-1 ODI series win over India, Ferguson believes the T20 series offers invaluable experience ahead of the World Cup. “It’s literally perfect prep,” he told reporters before joining the Kiwi camp in India.
“Even if these aren’t the exact grounds we’ll play on, conditions like dew and pitch behavior give us a strong build-up for the tournament. India are one of the best teams globally, and playing against them in their conditions is always a great challenge.”
Ferguson, who recently recovered from a calf injury sustained during an ILT20 match in the UAE, has been bowling at full tilt in the past week. He’s also set to take a brief paternity break, as his child is expected on February 20, but confirmed he plans to be available for the India series.
Though Ferguson didn’t appear in New Zealand’s updated squad list, the 34-year-old is keen to make a comeback after missing international cricket last year due to injury. He also ruled out retirement, saying, “I still feel fit and capable of contributing. If there ever comes a day I don’t feel deserving, then I’ll call it quits. But right now, I’m ready to perform at the World Cup.”

Ferguson, a Punjab Kings rostered player for IPL 2026, admits he still cherishes 50-over cricket. “That’s where I made my name more than T20, and I still love it,” he said. With a blend of form, experience, and determination, Ferguson seems set to make a strong mark as the Kiwis chase glory on Indian soil.
