Abbas Araghchi on Saturday met Asim Munir in Islamabad as Pakistan continued efforts to facilitate engagement between the United States and Iran.
According to a video shared by the Iranian embassy, the meeting was attended by Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei and ambassador Reza Amiri Moghadam.
The Pakistani delegation included Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and other officials. No details of the talks were disclosed.
Araghchi arrived in Islamabad late Friday for meetings with Pakistan’s leadership. He was received by senior officials, including Munir, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Naqvi. He is also expected to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
There was no confirmation of any direct meeting between Iranian and American officials during the visit. Baghaei said no Iran-US meeting was scheduled and that Tehran’s views would instead be conveyed through Pakistan.
Before departing for the trip, Araghchi said he was visiting Islamabad, Muscat and Moscow to coordinate with partners on bilateral issues and consult on regional developments, adding that neighbouring countries remain Iran’s priority.
As the Iranian delegation arrived, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner would travel to Pakistan for direct talks with Iranian representatives, though the US delegation had not yet arrived.
Meanwhile, Dar expressed hope for meaningful engagement between the two sides to support regional peace and stability. Pakistan’s Foreign Office said Dar also spoke with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty on Friday night about diplomatic efforts to initiate a fresh round of negotiations.
The first round of US-Iran talks held on April 11 and 12 failed to produce a breakthrough, prompting fresh mediation attempts by Pakistan. Earlier this week, Donald Trump extended a two-week ceasefire with Iran indefinitely to allow more time for Tehran to prepare a unified proposal to end the conflict.
