Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Friday expressed concern over reports of violence against religious minorities in Bangladesh following the killing of a Hindu youth, Deepu Chandra Das, calling the incident distressing.

“What is happening to Hindus in Bangladesh is very sad. This should not be happening,” Sai told reporters.

Earlier in the day, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra urged the Centre to take cognisance of what she described as rising violence against Hindu, Christian and Buddhist minorities in the neighbouring country.

In a post on X, Vadra said the killing of Deepu Chandra Das by a mob was “extremely alarming” and asserted that discrimination and violence based on religion, caste or identity are crimes against humanity.

“The Government of India should take cognisance of the rising violence against Hindu, Christian and Buddhist minorities in the neighbouring country and firmly raise the issue of their safety with the Government of Bangladesh,” she said.

Assam government spokesperson Piyush Hazarika also condemned the incident. Responding to a journalist’s post on X, he described the killing as a “barbaric act” and said it highlighted the dangers posed by targeted threats escalating into violence.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council strongly condemned the killing of Dipu Chandra Das in Bhaluka in Mymensingh district. In a statement, the organisation alleged that the garment worker was beaten to death on accusations of blasphemy, following which his body was hung from a tree and set on fire, calling the incident an attack on communal harmony.
