The Pakistan Navy on Thursday inducted its first Hangor-class submarine into service during a ceremony held in Sanya, China, marking a significant step in its naval modernisation efforts.
According to an official statement, the commissioning reflects the deepening defence ties between Pakistan and China. President Asif Ali Zardari, who is currently visiting China, attended the event as the chief guest. Also present were Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf and senior officials from both the Pakistan Navy and the People’s Liberation Army Navy.
Describing the development as a “historic milestone,” Zardari said the addition of the Hangor-class submarine strengthens Pakistan’s defence capabilities and underscores its commitment to safeguarding sovereignty, maritime interests, and economic routes.
Admiral Ashraf highlighted evolving challenges to global trade and energy security, particularly at strategic maritime chokepoints, and stressed the importance of advanced naval capabilities. He noted that the new submarines, equipped with modern weapons systems, advanced sensors, and Air Independent Propulsion technology, will enhance Pakistan’s ability to maintain stability at sea.
He added that these submarines will play a key role in deterring threats and ensuring the security of Sea Lines of Communication across the Arabian Sea and the broader Indian Ocean region.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir also congratulated the nation and the navy on the induction, the statement said.
