US President Donald Trump has strongly criticised France for refusing permission to American military aircraft carrying supplies to Israel to pass through its airspace, calling the move uncooperative and warning of future consequences.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with France’s stance, particularly in the context of ongoing tensions involving Iran. He described the country’s position as “very unhelpful” and suggested that the United States would take note of the decision.
The development comes amid growing diplomatic friction between Western nations over their roles in the West Asia conflict. According to reports cited by The Jerusalem Post, Israel has responded by suspending defence-related transactions with France, citing what it perceives as an increasingly unfriendly posture in recent years.
Sources quoted in the report indicated that the decision was formally directed by Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz, though it is believed to have been taken with the backing of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. One official reportedly described France’s refusal to allow US aircraft passage as a tipping point in deteriorating ties.
Tensions have also surfaced with Italy. Reports suggest that the Italian government declined a request to use the Sigonella airbase for US operations linked to the conflict. Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto stated that the decision followed the discovery of flight plans involving US aircraft that had not been formally approved.
Italian media indicated that the proposed flights were not routine logistical missions and therefore did not fall under existing bilateral agreements. Concerns were also raised over the lack of prior consultation with Italian authorities, as some of the plans were reportedly communicated while the aircraft were already airborne.
Earlier this month, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reiterated her government’s position against involvement in the conflict, stating that Italy does not seek to enter a state of war.
Meanwhile, Spain has also maintained a cautious approach. US President Trump had earlier warned of potential trade repercussions after Spain declined to permit the use of its military bases for operations related to the conflict with Iran.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has consistently opposed military escalation, reaffirming his government’s stance against war and calling for restraint.
