Canadian actor Jim Carrey received the honorary distinction at the César Awards 2026 ceremony in Paris, delivering a heartfelt acceptance speech entirely in French that captivated the audience.
The actor, globally known for blockbuster films like The Mask and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, was presented with the honor during the 51st edition of France’s prestigious cinema awards. The César honorary award is traditionally reserved for international artists who have made significant contributions to global cinema, following last year’s recognition of Hollywood star Julia Roberts.
Carrey was introduced on stage by filmmaker Michel Gondry, who previously directed him in the critically acclaimed 2004 film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The moment added emotional weight to the ceremony as the two shared a long professional association.
In his acceptance speech, Carrey reflected on the artistry of acting, comparing character creation to sculpting.
“As an actor, each character you play is like clay in the sculptor’s hands. You shape it according to your heart’s desire. I have been fortunate to share this art with so many people who have opened their hearts to me,” he said.
The actor also expressed gratitude toward his family members, who attended the ceremony with him. His daughter Jane, grandson Jackson, and partner Mina were present to celebrate the milestone moment.
Concluding his speech with humor, Carrey asked the audience about his French language skills.
“So, how was my French? Almost mediocre, right? Forgive me, I am still learning. My tongue is tired,” he joked, drawing laughter from the audience.
Carrey, who was born in Canada, began his career as a stand-up comedian before gaining international fame through the television show In Living Color. His breakout year came in 1994 with a trio of major hits: Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber.
Over the years, he has earned critical acclaim for dramatic roles as well, particularly in The Truman Show, Man on the Moon, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, winning two Golden Globe Awards for his performances.

In recognition of his artistic achievements, Carrey was previously appointed a Knight in France’s National Order of Arts and Letters in 2010. He has also received the Charlie Chaplin Award at the BAFTA Britannia Awards for his contributions to comedy cinema.
The evening marked another milestone in Carrey’s long and celebrated international career, blending humor, emotion, and artistic reflection in a memorable award ceremony appearance.
