The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced shortlists across 12 categories, spotlighting key contenders ahead of the Oscar nominations scheduled for next month.

Among the prominent films is director Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, which received multiple shortlist mentions, including makeup and hairstyling, cinematography, casting, sound, visual effects and two original songs, according to Variety.

Wicked: For Good also emerged as a strong contender, earning shortlist spots in cinematography, casting, makeup and hairstyling, original score, sound, visual effects and two original songs composed by Stephen Schwartz.

Netflix’s Frankenstein delivered a notable showing with recognition in casting, cinematography, makeup and hairstyling, original score, sound and visual effects.

The 12 shortlisted categories include Animated Short Film, Casting, Cinematography, Documentary Feature Film, Documentary Short Film, International Feature Film, Live Action Short Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Sound and Visual Effects.

In the International Feature Film category, 15 films have advanced to the next round of voting for the 98th Academy Awards. India is represented by Homebound.

Other shortlisted titles include Belen (Argentina), The Secret Agent (Brazil), It Was Just an Accident (France), Sound of Falling (Germany), The President’s Cake (Iraq), Kokuho (Japan), All That’s Left of You (Jordan), Sentimental Value (Norway), Palestine 36 (Palestine), No Other Choice (South Korea), Sirat (Spain), Late Shift (Switzerland), Left-Handed Girl (Taiwan) and The Voice of Hind Rajab (Tunisia).

Films shortlisted for Visual Effects include Avatar: Fire and Ash, Frankenstein, Jurassic World Rebirth, Sinners, Superman and Wicked: For Good, among others.

Nominations for the 98th Academy Awards will be announced on January 22, 2026. The Oscars ceremony will take place on March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood.
