Google has ushered in the “Gemini era” for Gmail, rolling out a new set of AI-powered features aimed at making email easier to read, write, and manage. The update introduces tools that help users quickly understand long conversations, draft better replies, and focus on what matters most in a crowded inbox.
One of the standout additions is AI overviews, which automatically summarise lengthy email threads. Instead of scrolling through multiple replies, users can see key discussion points and decisions at a glance. Gmail can also answer questions directly from the inbox using natural language, such as identifying who shared a quote or recalling a past decision. While conversation summaries are free for all users, inbox Q&A is available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
Google has also expanded its writing assistance with the help me write feature, now open to everyone. The tool helps draft and refine emails, while upgraded suggested replies generate context-aware responses that better reflect a user’s tone. A new proofread option offers advanced grammar and style suggestions, though it remains limited to paid subscribers. Google says Help Me Write will soon become more personalised by drawing context from other Google apps.
Another major update is AI Inbox, designed to cut through email clutter. Rather than showing messages only by time, the feature highlights urgent tasks, important alerts, and priority emails. It also creates a daily summary flagging deadlines, key senders, and reminders like bills or appointments. AI Inbox is currently being tested with a limited group of users, with a broader rollout expected in the coming months.
