President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday released the Constitution of India in the Santhali language at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan here.
Santhali, one of the most ancient living languages of India, was included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution through the 92nd Constitutional Amendment Act, 2003. The language is spoken by a large number of tribal people across Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and Bihar.
Addressing the gathering, the president said it was a moment of pride and joy for the Santhali-speaking community that the Constitution of India is now available in their own language, written in the Ol Chiki script.
She said the initiative would enable Santhali speakers to read, understand and connect with the Constitution more deeply, strengthening their awareness of constitutional values and rights.
The president also appreciated Union Minister of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal and his team for bringing out the Constitution in Ol Chiki script during the centenary year of the Constitution.
