Twisha Sharma death case is set to be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation, with the agency already dispatching a team to Bhopal to take charge of the probe, officials said on Monday.
Twisha Sharma was found hanging at her marital residence in the Katara Hills area of Bhopal on May 12. The CBI team will collect all case-related documents, evidence and records from the Madhya Pradesh Police after formally assuming control of the investigation, officials added.
During a hearing on Monday, a Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi said the court would ensure that the investigation remains fair, independent and impartial.
Earlier, police had filed an FIR under Sections 80(2), 85 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, along with provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act. The complaint named Twisha’s husband Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh.
The apex court also took note of the solicitor general’s submission that the matter would be taken up with the concerned authorities to facilitate an immediate transfer of the case to the CBI.
The bench advised both the victim’s and accused’s families to refrain from making public statements or speaking to the media, urging them instead to place their versions before the investigating agency so that the ongoing probe is not influenced.
