The Union Home Ministry has asked states and Union Territories to closely monitor pro-Iran radical preachers delivering inflammatory sermons that could potentially lead to violence, in the wake of the Israel–US attack on Iran, officials said.

In a letter circulated to all states on February 28, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) also directed authorities to keep a strict vigil on social media activities of extremists and handles linked to global terror groups, they said.

The ministry cautioned that rapidly unfolding global developments could have a domestic ripple effect through provocative rhetoric, and advised states to heighten vigilance to ensure that no law-and-order situation arises.

As part of the advisory, the MHA asked states to strengthen security arrangements at consulates, embassies and other diplomatic establishments of the United States and Israel within their jurisdictions. Security is also to be enhanced at other institutions and entities linked to the two countries to prevent any untoward incident and maintain peace and tranquillity.

The advisory comes amid heightened tensions following reports of a US-Israel strike on Iran. On Sunday, Shia mourners reportedly took to the streets in several parts of the country to express outrage and grief over the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the strike.

Officials said the situation is being closely monitored and states have been urged to act proactively to maintain communal harmony and public order.
