Large crowds gathered across the streets of Mumbai on Monday to bid a final farewell to legendary singer Asha Bhosle as her mortal remains were taken for the last rites at Shivaji Park Crematorium.
The city witnessed an emotional outpouring as admirers, fans and members of the music and film fraternity came together to honour one of India’s most celebrated voices.
Political leaders, actors, musicians and close associates also paid their respects. Her mortal remains were kept at her residence for public homage, draped in the Tricolour, while mourners queued to offer flowers and prayers.
Asha Bhosle passed away on Sunday at the age of 92 at Breach Candy Hospital, ending an extraordinary career that spanned more than eight decades.
Her last rites were scheduled to be held with full state honours at 4 pm at Shivaji Park in Mumbai.
Widely regarded as one of the most versatile singers in Indian music, Asha Bhosle’s repertoire included classical songs, ghazals, cabaret numbers and contemporary pop music. She was recognised by Guinness World Records for the most studio recordings and, alongside her sister Lata Mangeshkar, helped shape the golden era of Hindi film music.
Born to Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, she began singing at a young age and went on to build an unmatched legacy.
Her collaborations with R. D. Burman, whom she later married, remain among the most admired in Indian cinema.
