New Delhi
As a joint military operation by the United States and Israel against Iran escalated tensions across the Middle East, India on Saturday called for restraint and respect for sovereignty.
In its first official response to the rapidly evolving situation, New Delhi said it is “deeply concerned” about the developments in Iran and the wider Gulf region.
Following the strikes by the US and Israel, Iran launched retaliatory attacks targeting several American military bases in the region, including in Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.
“We urge all sides to exercise restraint, avoid escalation, and prioritise the safety of civilians,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement.
“Dialogue and diplomacy should be pursued to de-escalate tensions and address underlying issues. Sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states must be respected,” it added.
The MEA said Indian missions across the Middle East are in close contact with Indian nationals and have issued appropriate advisories, urging them to remain vigilant and adhere to local security guidelines.
