The Government of Meghalaya on Wednesday lifted the suspension of internet services across all five districts of the Garo Hills region after reviewing the law and order situation.

The restrictions had been imposed following violent incidents that left two people dead and triggered unrest, particularly in Tura, where clashes, vandalism, and property damage were reported.

According to officials, protests erupted over a notification issued by the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), which barred non-tribals from participating in the tribal council elections.

An order from the Home (Political) Department revoked the March 11 directive that had suspended mobile data and internet services in West, East, South, North, and South West Garo Hills districts.

Authorities said the decision to restore connectivity was taken after signs of improvement in the situation in recent days.

The move has brought relief to residents, businesses, and institutions in the region. Earlier, the state government had postponed the GHADC elections scheduled for April 10 to October, citing the need to restore normalcy and ensure a conducive environment.
