New Delhi
Union Minister Jitendra Singh was conferred with a lifetime achievement award in medicine and diabetes at MVCON 2026, organised by MV Diabetes Chennai on Friday.
The award recognises his “outstanding contribution as a distinguished medical professional, author and advocate for advancing diabetes care and public health.”
Legacy of diabetology in India
The institution hosting the event was founded in 1954 by M. Viswanathan, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of diabetology in India.
Accepting the honour, Singh said the recognition holds special significance as it commemorates Viswanathan’s legacy and the contributions of early post-independence medical professionals.
“It is a tribute not only to his own lifelong work but also to the rich tradition of medical excellence shaped by the first generation of physicians,” he said.

From clinical practice to advanced technology
Singh also reflected on the evolution of medical science, noting the shift from reliance on clinical examination and patient history to modern tools such as advanced diagnostics and artificial intelligence.
A trained diabetologist and academician, Singh has decades of experience in the field. His research on stress-induced diabetes among Kashmiri migrants has gained international recognition.
The award highlights his dual role as a medical expert and public representative contributing to healthcare policy and awareness.
