Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar who died on Sunday at the age of 92 years, was cremated at Mumbai's iconic Shivaji Park with full state honours.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his last repects to the iconic singer ahead of the cremation.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, his deputy Ajit Pawar, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, actors Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Ranbir Kapoor and lyricist Javed Akhtar were among those who attended the funeral.

Lata Mangeshkar’s nephew Aadinath Mangeshkar who is the son of her brother Hridaynath performed the final rites.

Ahead of her cremation, her songs were played at Shivaji Park. A tri-services band sounded the Last Post and accorded a salute as the gathering stood in attention.

Hundreds of people joined her funeral procession from her residence to Shivaji Park as her body was carried in an army truck decorated with flowers. The body was draped in the tricolour.

Lata Mangeshkar died Sunday morning of organ failure. She had been admitted to Mumbai's Breach Candy hospital on January 8 after she was diagnosed with Covid-19 and pneumonia. Though having recovered from Covid the singer was put on ventilator support after her condition worsened on Saturday. The Cebtral Government has announced a two-day mourning for the Nighingale of India as Lata Mangeshkar was fondly called. The Maharashtra government has declared a holiday on Monday to mourn her death.
