Kolkata’s iconic Jewish bakery, Nahoum and Sons, has been forced to temporarily shut operations due to disruptions in LPG supply linked to the ongoing West Asia crisis.

The over 120-year-old establishment, a heritage landmark in the city, has remained closed from March 18 to March 22, citing “unavoidable circumstances” in a notice displayed outside the shop.

According to officials, the bakery had been grappling with a shortage of commercial cooking gas for some time, which severely impacted production. Despite efforts to continue operations with limited supply, the situation eventually made it unviable to remain open, leading to the five-day shutdown.

The disruption is tied to global energy supply issues caused by tensions in West Asia, particularly the choking of the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for oil and gas shipments.

The bakery is expected to reopen on March 23 and aims to gradually return to normal operations.

Known for preserving its legacy and traditional recipes, Nahoum’s has rarely shut down in its long history, apart from the COVID-19 lockdown and a brief closure in 2013 following the death of its owner David Nahoum.
