Family members of Mehraj Malik and leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party on Tuesday welcomed his release, calling it a “victory of truth” and reaffirming their commitment to public welfare in Jammu and Kashmir.

Malik’s father, Shammas Din, said his son had always worked for the people and their well-being. He described the development as a victory for both truth and the public.

Malik, who also serves as the AAP’s Jammu and Kashmir unit chief, had been detained under the Public Safety Act in September on allegations of disturbing public order and was lodged in Kathua Jail.

On Monday, the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court set aside his preventive detention, ruling that the order issued by the Doda District Magistrate was legally unsustainable and reflected non-application of mind.

Din said the family remained steadfast despite difficulties and stayed connected with the public throughout the period. He also thanked supporters from areas such as Doda and Ramban who travelled to show solidarity.

Imran Hussain, who came to welcome Malik, thanked the judiciary for quashing what he described as a baseless case. He congratulated Malik, his family and the people of the region, calling the decision significant.

Hussain also alleged that voices raising public issues were being suppressed, saying those who speak for people often face action.
