Congress MP Mohammad Jawed and several opposition parliamentarians on Wednesday wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, raising concerns over alleged threats to members of the Muslim community in Uttam Nagar.

In the letter, Jawed urged Shah to direct the Delhi Police to act firmly against those “spreading hate” and to ensure protection for vulnerable residents.

The development follows protests by members of some right-wing groups in Uttam Nagar over the killing of a 26-year-old man earlier this month after a neighbourhood clash during Holi celebrations. The protests reportedly turned violent, with vehicles belonging to the accused family set on fire.

Jawed alleged that Muslims in the area are facing “open threats, intimidation, and a systematic attempt to create fear,” and said the situation reflects a troubling pattern rather than an isolated law and order issue.

He also raised concerns about what he described as an inadequate or selective police response, warning that inaction could erode public trust and embolden those attempting to disturb communal harmony.

Citing constitutional guarantees under Articles 14, 19 and 21, Jawed emphasised the need to uphold equality, freedom, and the right to life with dignity.

The MP called for immediate intervention, accountability for any lapses, and an independent review of police action. He also stressed the need for visible and effective measures to restore confidence among residents.

Speaking to reporters, Jawed alleged that “terror” was being spread in the area and criticised authorities for not taking adequate steps to address the situation.
