Madhya Pradesh Minister Vijay Shah on Saturday once again apologised for his controversial remarks against Colonel Sofia Qureshi, attributing the statement to what he described as a moment of “patriotic excitement,” as the Supreme Court-mandated deadline for deciding on his prosecution approaches.
Addressing reporters here, Shah said he never intended to disrespect a woman officer, the Indian armed forces or any section of society.
The Supreme Court, on January 19, had directed the Madhya Pradesh government to take a decision within two weeks on whether to grant sanction to prosecute the minister over his remarks. Following the directive, the Congress has intensified its demand for Shah’s resignation or removal from the state cabinet.
The minister had come under sharp criticism in May last year after a video of his speech at a public function in Raikunda village of Indore district went viral on social media. His comments were directed at Colonel Qureshi, who had gained national attention for briefing the media during ‘Operation Sindoor’, India’s military action against terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan.
“I have stated this earlier and I repeat it today — I had no intention of insulting any woman officer, the Indian Army or any community,” Shah said.
He maintained that his words did not reflect his true sentiments and were spoken impulsively. “The remarks were made in a moment of intense patriotic emotion. The intention behind the mistake should also be understood. There was no malice,” he added.
Shah said he has apologised multiple times “from the depths of my heart” and reiterated his apology once again.
“It pains me deeply that such a controversy arose due to a minor lapse on my part. I hope my feelings will be understood in the right perspective. I have always held the Indian Army in the highest regard and will continue to do so,” he said.
Emphasising the importance of restraint in public life, the minister said he had reflected on the episode and learned an important lesson.
“Maintaining dignity and sensitivity in one’s words is essential. I accept my responsibility and assure that I will be more careful in the future. Such an incident will not be repeated,” Shah said, offering a renewed apology to those hurt by his remarks, particularly members of the armed forces.
Earlier, the Madhya Pradesh High Court had strongly criticised Shah for making “derogatory” and “indecent” remarks against Colonel Qureshi and directed the police to register an FIR against him.
Following the court’s suo motu intervention, a case was registered at Manpur police station under sections 152, 196(1)(b) and 197(1)(c) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
