“Heartiest congratulations to Mr. To Lam on his election as President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. I am confident that under his leadership, the time-tested friendship between our two countries will continue to grow from strength to strength,” he said.
Vietnam’s National Assembly unanimously elected Lam, who also serves as General Secretary of the Communist Party, as president for a five-year term—consolidating his authority over both the party and the state.
The development marks a departure from Vietnam’s traditional model of shared leadership, where key positions are typically held by different individuals, and draws comparisons with governance structures seen in countries like China.
