Samajwadi Party MP Rajiv Rai on Friday said that any action by the government perceived as targeting Mamata Banerjee would ultimately strengthen her public support.

Speaking to reporters, Rai remarked that using state machinery against the West Bengal chief minister could generate greater sympathy among voters, leading to a rise in her popularity. He also commented that if the Election Commission of India had acted similarly in Uttar Pradesh by-elections, the results there might have been different.

His statement came after Banerjee criticised both the poll body and the ruling BJP at the Centre, alleging that West Bengal was being unfairly singled out. She termed the transfer of over 50 senior officials as an “undeclared emergency” and accused authorities of political interference.

In a social media post, Banerjee said the large-scale reshuffle—including key administrative and police officials—was arbitrary and not based on administrative needs. She argued that such actions undermine constitutional principles and reflect increasing politicisation of institutions meant to function independently.

She also flagged delays in the publication of supplementary electoral rolls, claiming it goes against directions of the Supreme Court of India and creates uncertainty among voters.
