The Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Monday was adjourned for the day after members paid tributes to senior SP MLA Alam Badi, who died last month.

As the House assembled on the opening day of the Monsoon Session, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath condoled the death of the veteran legislator, who passed away on July 23.

Adityanath described him as one of the senior-most members of the Assembly and recalled his long association with public life.

Born on March 16, 1936 in Azamgarh district, Badi was a five-time MLA from the Nizamabad Assembly constituency. He was first elected to the Assembly in 1996 and was subsequently re-elected in 2002, 2012, 2017 and 2022, all on Samajwadi Party ticket, he said.

Leaders of various political parties, including Leader of Opposition Mata Prasad Pandey also read out condolence messages, recalling Badi's contribution to public life and expressing sympathy with the bereaved family.

Members then observed a two-minute silence as a mark of respect to the departed leader.

Speaker Satish Mahana later adjourned the House for the day after obituary references to other former members.
