Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said Parliament was on the verge of creating a “new history” with the expected amendment this week to enable implementation of the Women’s Reservation Act from 2029.

Addressing a gathering of women ahead of the three-day special session of Parliament, Modi said the proposed changes to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam would mark an important step towards a more equal and just society.

He noted that when the legislation was introduced in 2023, it received unanimous support from all political parties. According to him, there was also a broad demand for ensuring that the law comes into effect by 2029, with opposition parties particularly stressing early implementation.

Modi said Parliament now had the opportunity to create history that would fulfil the aspirations of earlier generations while laying the foundation for the future.

He added that the move represented a commitment to building an India where equality and social justice are not just slogans, but become a natural part of governance, decision-making and public life.
