CWG: Weightlifters get rousing reception in Amritsar

The Indian weightlifting team, which put up an impressive show in the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, was felicitated on arrival at at the International Airport in Amritsar on Saturday.

The weightlifters and coaches were given a warm welcome by district administration officials.

The Indian lifters came back with 10 medals in the games comprising three gold, three silver and four bronze medals.

Among the gold medalists were Tokyo olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu in the 49 kg category, youngster Jeremy Lalrinunnga in the men's 67 kg category and Achinta Sheuli in men's 73 kg.

Sanket Sagar, Vikas Thakur, Bindyarani Devi bagged silver medals, whereas, bronze medals were won by Lovepreet Singh, Gurdeep Singh and Harjinder Kaur.

The rich haul meant that India topped the weightlifting medal tally for a second successive edition in the multi-nation games, winning one medal more than their overall haul in the 2018 edition at Gold Coast, Australia.

In that edition, India clinched five gold, two silver and two bronze medals.
